How to Import Chats from ChatGPT or Claude into Magai

Step-by-step: export from ChatGPT or Claude, then import the JSON into Magai.

You can bring your ChatGPT or Claude chat history into Magai. Export the file from ChatGPT or Claude, then upload it in Magai. Conversations come across in a few minutes, and Custom GPTs from ChatGPT arrive as Agents.

1. Export from ChatGPT

These steps match OpenAI's current help article: Exporting your ChatGPT history and data.

  1. Sign in to chatgpt.com (or chat.openai.com) on the web.

  2. Open your profile menu, then select Settings.

  3. Select Data controls.

  4. Under Export data, select Export, then confirm the export.

  5. Wait for OpenAI's email (or SMS). Exports can take up to 7 days. Open the message and download the ZIP while you are signed in to the same ChatGPT account. The download link expires 24 hours after you receive it.

  6. Unzip the download and find conversations.json. Larger exports may include numbered conversation JSON files instead of a single file. Magai needs the JSON file(s), not the full ZIP.

Note: Self-serve export is available for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible Edu workspaces. It is not available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, or Healthcare workspaces — contact your workspace owner in those cases.

2. Export from Claude

These steps match Anthropic's current help article: Export your Claude data.

  1. Sign in at claude.ai or open Claude Desktop. Exports cannot be started from the Claude iOS or Android apps.

  2. Open Settings, then go to Privacy.

  3. Click Export data.

  4. Wait for Anthropic's email with a download link (there may be a short delay). Sign in to the same Claude account, then download the file. The link expires 24 hours after it is sent. If it expires, request a new export.

  5. Unzip the download and find conversations.json. That is the file you upload to Magai.

Note: Individual Free, Pro, and Max users can export themselves. On Team or Enterprise plans, an owner must turn on “Allow members to export their own data” before members see the Export data button.

3. Import into Magai

Log in at app.magai.co.

  1. Click the Chats icon in the left sidebar to open Chats History.

  2. Click the expand icon (two outward arrows) at the top right of the Chats History panel to open the full view.

  3. Click Import at the top of the expanded view.

  4. In the Import ChatGPT Chats window, under Select Chats Origin, choose ChatGPT or Claude.

  5. Drop your conversations.json file into the box, or click it to browse. Only .json files are accepted, so upload the file, not the .zip.

  6. Click Start Import. Your chats will be imported within minutes and appear in your chat history.

What transfers?

Your ChatGPT or Claude conversation history comes into Magai as chats you can open and continue. Custom GPTs from ChatGPT arrive as Agents. Exact fidelity of titles, timestamps, branches, and file attachments can vary — if something important is missing after import, email [email protected].

How long does it take?

Getting the export from ChatGPT or Claude can take from a few minutes up to several days (ChatGPT exports can take up to 7 days). Once you upload the file in Magai, processing usually finishes in a few minutes.

What if the import fails?

  • Confirm you uploaded the .json file, not the .zip.

  • Confirm the file came from the ChatGPT or Claude account you meant to export.

  • Try a fresh export if the download link expired or the file looks incomplete.

  • If it still fails, email [email protected] with the source (ChatGPT or Claude), about how large the file is, and any error message you see.
